QSK60 CM2358 Engine: Camshaft Speed/Position Sensor Data is Erratic or Incorrect

This guide details the troubleshooting and repair process for a Cummins QSK60 CM2358 engine when the camshaft speed/position sensor data is erratic, intermittent, or incorrect.

Error Code Information

Error Code: 1376
PID: S64
SPN: 723
FMI: 2/2
Light: Maintenance

Reason

The ECM (Engine Control Module) has detected a loss of signal from the camshaft position sensor, causing unreliable data input.

Effect

This fault may result in reduced engine performance. Prolonged operation with this issue can further degrade engine torque.

Circuit Description

The ECM supplies 5 volts to the camshaft speed/position sensor via the sensor power circuit and provides a ground through the sensor feedback circuit. The sensor generates a signal as the camshaft speed indicator passes, allowing the ECM to calculate engine speed and position.

This sensor also serves as a backup if the primary crankshaft speed/position sensor signal fails.

Component Location

The camshaft position sensor is located inside the transmission cover.

Diagnostic Conditions

Runs Continuously: The diagnostic runs continuously while the engine operates.
DTC Activation: The ECM detects a sensor failure during engine operation and activates a white maintenance light or flashes the amber check engine light.

Actions if Trouble Code is Active

Service Indicators: The ECM will turn on the white maintenance light or flash the amber check engine light.
Performance Impact: Extended operation with this fault results in reduced engine torque.

Clearing the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)

Repair Verification:

Perform a key cycle.
Start the engine and let it idle for one minute.

Status Check:

Use the recommended electronic service tool to verify that the fault is inactive.

Light Reset:

The ECM will automatically turn off the maintenance or check engine light after successful diagnostics.

Command Reset:

Use the “Reset All Faults” command in the service tool to clear active and inactive faults.

Shop Talk

Each ECM has a unique source address displayed when connected to a service tool. Use this address to identify the specific ECM and circuit when troubleshooting.

Possible Causes:

Open or short circuit in the +5 VDC power supply, signal, or return wires in the engine harness.
Damaged or failed camshaft position sensor.
Worn or damaged speedometer cam.
Incorrect sensor air gap (too small or too large).
