Conditions Generating This Code

The Electronic Control Module (ECM) generates this code under the following conditions:

The ECM detects an intermittent or complete loss of signal from the primary speed/timing sensor for 2 seconds.
The engine has been running for more than three seconds.

System Response

If equipped, the diagnostic lamp will flash, and the derate lamp will illuminate. The shutdown lamp may also come on.
The diagnostic code will be logged.
The ECM will switch to using the signal from the secondary speed/timing sensor.

Possible Performance Effect

The engine will be derated.
If the signal from the secondary speed/timing sensor is also lost, the engine will shut down.

This diagnostic code indicates a loss of signal from the primary speed/timing sensor. To address this issue, perform the following diagnostic procedure:

Engine Speed/Timing Sensor Circuit Test

Follow these steps to test the engine speed/timing sensor circuit:

Check the connections to the primary speed/timing sensor for any signs of damage or corrosion.
Verify that the wiring to the sensor is intact and properly connected.
Use a multimeter to check the sensor’s voltage and signal output.
If any issues are found with the sensor or its wiring, repair or replace the components as necessary.

Results

OK: If the sensor and its circuit are functioning correctly, the test is complete.
Not OK: If there are issues with the sensor or its circuit, take corrective action based on the test results.
