Hardware and Software Overview
The most straightforward way to access the Mercedes Star Diagnostic ecosystem is by purchasing the full Mercedes Star Diagnostic Tool suite, which includes all necessary hardware, a multiplexer, software, and more. While expensive, this is the ideal option for serious diagnostics. Alternatively, Xentry PassThru is available for an annual fee and is a viable choice for professionals.
For those looking for more budget-friendly solutions, PassThru-compatible software can be used with devices like the Tactrix OpenPort 2.0. This approach may suit many users but won’t be covered here. Instead, this guide focuses on VXDIAG tools such as the VCX SE or AllScanner devices, which support multiple vehicle brands, including Mercedes-Benz.
VXDIAG often bundles its tools with preloaded software on SSDs, HDDs, or used laptops. If you’re using a newer laptop (2020+), ensure you convert the partition from MBR to GPT to boot from the external drive, using tools like EaseUS. Once converted, you can clone the external drive to your internal hard drive if desired.
VCX SE Device Overview
The VXDIAG VCX SE is a versatile diagnostic interface compatible with multiple brands and supports key protocols like DoIP, UDS, and DoNET. It works with both PassThru and OpenShell versions of Xentry. You can connect the device to your PC via Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or the included USB-C to USB-A cable. For stable operation while maintaining internet access, it’s best to use the USB-C connection.
Setting up the device is straightforward:
Connect the VCX SE to your PC via the cable.
Install and use the software to manage the connection.
VXDIAG Software Overview
If you purchase a preloaded SSD or laptop, it will include various software tools. Many of these tools may be unnecessary and some may be in Chinese. To streamline your setup, uninstall or ignore irrelevant programs (e.g., chat apps, browsers, etc.). Focus on these key applications:
VCX Manager – The primary tool for managing the connection between the VCI, your vehicle, and diagnostic software.
Xentry (Offline) – Main diagnostic software.
Xentry Diagnosis Stop – A script to shut down Xentry sessions properly.
DTS Monaco – Coding software (typically preloaded with version 8).
WIS, EPC, StarFinder, SDmedia – Supplementary tools for documentation and parts information.
How to Use VCX Manager
The VCX Manager software handles communication between your PC and the VCX SE device. You don’t need to connect the VCI to your vehicle to configure the software.
Connect the VCI to Your PC:
Plug the VCX SE into your computer using the USB cable.
Ignore any error messages if the VCI isn’t connected to the vehicle.
Launch VCX Manager:
Open the software and wait for your device to appear. If it doesn’t, press the ReConnect button.
You’ll hear a beep from the device once it’s successfully connected.
Update Software, Firmware, and Licenses:
In the Device tab, update the firmware.
In the Diagnostic tab, ensure required diagnostic software like PassThru (preinstalled) and Benz C6 (install if missing) is ready.
Return to the Device tab and update the licenses.
Connecting to Your Vehicle
Once your VCI is configured, you’re ready to connect to your vehicle:
Prepare Your Vehicle:
Plug the VCX SE into your vehicle’s OBD2 port.
Turn on the ignition (press the Start button twice without pressing the brake pedal). Ensure the engine is off.
Preserve Battery Power:
Disable high-drain features like A/C or the infotainment system.
Check Connections in VCX Manager:
Open VCX Manager and press ReConnect to verify the connection.
Confirm the OBD voltage (~12.6V). If the voltage is above 13.5V, turn off the engine.
Enable DoIP:
Go to the Device tab and press the DoIP Switch button.
In the new window, select BENZ (ISO-13400) and press DoIP ON.
Minimize the DoIP Config window.
With these steps completed, your VCX SE and VCX Manager are fully set up and ready for diagnostics or coding work. Happy troubleshooting!
