How to Solve ISUZU IDSS Diagnostic Adapter Does Not Communicate with CAN Device

When you use IDSS diagnostic scan to do some function,it may occur communication error.Sometime you will find scan tool can not build communication with CAN device (Models with Radar Sensor and Stereo Camera)

Note:

  • The installed devices vary depending on the vehicle. All the devices that may be connected to the CAN communication circuit are shown in the diagnostic procedure. Perform diagnosis only for the applicable device procedure.

 

1 Engine control system check

Refer to “51.Engine Control 1A.Troubleshooting(4JJ3 with DPD) Diagnostic system check-engine controls”.

 

2 Scan tool communication verification

Caution:

  • If the IDSS is in use, check for a malfunction in the IDSS interface equipment. If the IDSS interface equipment LED does not illuminate, refer to Scan tool does not power up, and inspect the power supply.

 

1) Connect the scan tool.

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

3) Check the vehicle specifications and verify the status of communication with the following control modules using a scan tool. Can communication with any of the control modules be established?

 

  • ECM
  • Battery sensor
  • TCCM
  • Rear differential lock control unit
  • TCM
  • Information module
  • Central gateway control unit

 

Yes

=>Go to ECM communication verification.

 

No

=>Go to DLC inspection.

 

3 ECM communication verification

1) Check the communication status with the ECM using the scan tool. Can communication with the ECM be established?

 

Yes

=>Go to Battery sensor communication verification.

 

No

Go to Lost communication with the ECM.

Refer to “51.Engine Control 1A.Troubleshooting(4JJ3 with DPD) lost communication with the ECM (models with radar sensor/ stereo camera)”.

 

 

 

4 Battery sensor communication verification

1) Check the communication status with the battery sensor using the scan tool. Can communication with the battery sensor be established?

 

Yes

=>Go to TCCM communication verification.

 

No

Go to Lost communication with the battery sensor.

 

Refer to “51.Engine Control 1A.Troubleshooting(IBS (4JJ3 with DPD)) lost communication with the battery sensor (models with radar sensor/ stereo camera)”.

 

 

 

5 TCCM communication verification

1) Check the communication status with the TCCM using the scan tool. Is communication with the TCCM established?

 

Yes

=>Go to Rear differential lock control unit communication verification.

 

No

Go to Lost communication with the TCCM.

Refer to “53.Driveline Control 3A.Troubleshooting(4WD models (Type1)) lost communication with the TCCM (models with radar sensor/ stereo camera)”.

 

6 Rear differential lock control unit communication verification

1) Verify that communication can be established with the rear differential lock control unit using the scan tool. Can communication with the rear differential lock control unit be established?

 

Yes

=>Go to TCM communication verification.

 

No

Go to Lost communication with the differential lock control unit.

 

Refer to “53.Driveline Control 3A.Troubleshooting(Differential Lock (Type1)) lost communication with the rear differential lock control unit (models with radar sensor/ stereo camera)”.

 

 

 

7 TCM communication verification

1) Check the communication status with the TCM using the scan tool. Is communication with the TCM established?

 

Yes

=>Go to Information module communication verification.

 

No

Go to Lost communication with the TCM.

Refer to “55.Transmission Control 5A.Troubleshooting(AWR6B45) lost communication with the TCM (models with radar sensor/ stereo camera)”.

 

8 Information module communication verification

1) Verify that communication can be established with the information module using the scan tool. Can communication with the information module be established?

 

Yes

=>Go to Central gateway control unit communication verification.

 

No

Go to Lost communication with the information module.

Refer to “64.Body Control 10I.Troubleshooting(Information Module) lost communication with the information module (models with radar sensor/ stereo camera)”.

 

9 Central gateway control unit communication verification

1) Verify that communication can be established with the central gateway control unit using a scan tool. Can communication with the central gateway control unit be established?

 

Yes

=>Go to Inspection for open circuit and short circuit in CAN circuit.

 

No

 

Go to Lost communication with the central gateway.

Refer to “64.Body Control 10I.Troubleshooting(Central GateWay) lost communication with the central gateway control unit”.

 

10 Inspection for open circuit and short circuit in CAN circuit

1) Inspect for an intermittent short together between the CAN Low and CAN High circuits, and an intermittent short to ground or intermittent short to the power supply circuit. Is the result normal?

2) Inspect for intermittent open circuits in the CAN Low circuit and CAN High circuit in the control unit with which communication cannot be established. Is the result normal?

Refer to “LHD Controller Area Network (Central Gateway C/U)” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

3) Are all of the results normal?

Yes

=>Go to Repair verification.

 

No

Repair the circuit as necessary.

=>Go to Repair verification.

 

11 DLC inspection

1) Inspect for poor connections at the DLC (pins 6 and 14 of C19). Is the connection status normal?

Refer to “RHD DLC” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Refer to “LHD DLC” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

 

Yes

=>Go to Central gateway control system inspection.

 

No

Repair the connections as necessary.

=>Go to Repair verification.

 

12 Central gateway control system inspection

1) Perform the central gateway control system inspection.

Refer to “64.Body Control 10I.Troubleshooting(Central GateWay) diagnostic system check – central gateway controls”.

Procedure completion

=>Go to ECM inspection.

 

13 ECM inspection

1) Turn OFF the ignition switch.

2) Disconnect the ECM harness connector (C9).

Refer to “RHD Controller Area Network (Central Gateway C/U (4JJ3 with DPD))” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Refer to “LHD Controller Area Network (Central Gateway C/U)” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

3) Turn ON the ignition switch.

4) Verify that communication can be established with control units other than the ECM using a scan tool. Can communication with control units other than the ECM be established?

Note:

  • After checking, turn OFF the ignition switch, and go to the next procedure after connecting the disconnected harness connector.

 

Yes

=>Go to ECM replacement.

 

No

=>Go to Battery sensor inspection.

 

14 Battery sensor inspection

1) Disconnect the battery sensor harness connector (C49).

Refer to “RHD Controller Area Network (Central Gateway C/U (4JJ3 with DPD))” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Refer to “LHD Controller Area Network (Central Gateway C/U)” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

3) Verify that communication can be established with control units other than the battery sensor using a scan tool. Can communication with control units other than the battery sensor be established?

Note:

  • After checking, turn OFF the ignition switch, and go to the next procedure after connecting the disconnected harness connector.

 

Yes

=>Go to Battery sensor replacement.

 

No

=>Go to TCCM inspection.

 

15 TCCM inspection

1) Disconnect the TCCM harness connector (C15).

Refer to “RHD Controller Area Network (Central Gateway C/U (4JJ3 with DPD))” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Refer to “LHD Controller Area Network (Central Gateway C/U)” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

3) Verify that communication can be established with control units other than the TCCM using a scan tool. Can communication with control units other than the TCCM be established?

Note:

  • After checking, turn OFF the ignition switch, and go to the next procedure after connecting the disconnected harness connector.

Yes

=>Go to TCCM replacement.

 

No

=>Go to Rear differential lock control unit inspection.

 

16 Rear differential lock control unit inspection

1) Disconnect the rear differential lock control unit harness connector (C57).

Refer to “RHD Controller Area Network (Central Gateway C/U (4JJ3 with DPD))” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Refer to “LHD Controller Area Network (Central Gateway C/U)” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

3) Verify that communication can be established with control units other than the rear differential lock control unit using the scan tool. Can communication with control units other than the rear differential lock control unit be established?

Note:

  • After checking, turn OFF the ignition switch, and go to the next procedure after connecting the disconnected harness connector.

Yes

=>Go to Rear differential lock control unit replacement.

No

=>Go to TCM inspection.

 

17 TCM inspection

1) Disconnect the TCM harness connector (E7).

Refer to “RHD Controller Area Network (Central Gateway C/U (4JJ3 with DPD))” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Refer to “LHD Controller Area Network (Central Gateway C/U)” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

3) Verify that communication can be established with control units other than the TCM using a scan tool. Can communication with control units other than the TCM be established?

 

 

Note:

  • After checking, turn OFF the ignition switch, and go to the next procedure after connecting the disconnected harness connector.

Yes

=>Go to TCM replacement.

No

=>Go to Information module inspection.

 

18 Information module inspection

1) Disconnect the information module harness connector (C105).

Refer to “RHD Controller Area Network (Central Gateway C/U (4JJ3 with DPD))” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Refer to “LHD Controller Area Network (Central Gateway C/U)” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

3) Verify that communication can be established with control units other than the information module using the scan tool. Can communication with control units other than the information module be established?

Note:

  • After checking, turn OFF the ignition switch, and go to the next procedure after connecting the disconnected harness connector.

Yes

=>Go to Information module replacement.

No

=>Go to Central gateway control unit internal resistance inspection.

 

19 Central gateway control unit internal resistance inspection

1) Disconnect the ECM harness connector (C9).

2) Measure the resistance of the ECM harness connector (pins 14 and 16 of C9) with a DMM. Is the resistance within the specified range?

Refer to “RHD Controller Area Network (Central Gateway C/U (4JJ3 with DPD))” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Refer to “LHD Controller Area Network (Central Gateway C/U)” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Value: 110 to 130 Ω

Yes

=>Go to ECM internal resistance inspection.

No

=>Go to Central gateway control unit replacement.

 

20 ECM internal resistance inspection

1) Disconnect the central gateway control unit harness connector (B41)

2) Measure the resistance of the central gateway control unit harness connector (pins 5 and 6 of B41) with a DMM. Is the resistance within the specified range?

Refer to “RHD Controller Area Network (Central Gateway C/U (4JJ3 with DPD))” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Refer to “LHD Controller Area Network (Central Gateway C/U)” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Value: 110 to 130 Ω

Yes

Repair the short to ground, short to the power supply circuit, open circuit, or the short together between the CAN Low circuit and CAN High circuit in the control unit.

=>Go to Repair verification.

No

=>Go to ECM replacement.

 

21 ECM replacement

Note:

  • Perform programming after replacing the ECM.

Refer to “1.Engine 1Z.Engine Electrical Control(4JJ3 with DPD) ECM removal”.

22 Battery sensor replacement

23 TCCM replacement

  • Rear differential lock control unit
  • TCM
  • Information module
  • Central gateway control unit

 

Yes

The system is normal.

 

No

=>Go to Scan tool communication verification.
